Wellington Hospital - Decant Ward
Project Overview
Location:
New Zealand
Client:
Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand
Sector:
Public Healthcare
Completion:
2023

A fast-tracked prefab decant ward at Wellington Regional Hospital was designed and delivered through seamless collaboration between the design and construction teams. The project efficiently added 12 new beds to support ongoing hospital operations during the copper pipe remediation works.

Using coordinated BIM design and off-site prefabrication, the team ensured speed, accuracy, and minimal disruption while maintaining high-quality healthcare standards.

Off-Site Construction for a Fast-Tracked Hospital Expansion

As part of the complex copper pipe remediation project, the project required creating a temporary decant ward on Level 4 roof of Wellington Regional Hospital, which will see 12 additional beds provided. Due to the location and the delivery timeframe, it was identified that this project will need to be a prefab (off-site construction).

Fast-Track Process Driven by Collaboration and Precision

As part of a wider consultant team, we needed to design and collaborate with the construction team using a Fast-track Process to start their procurement process. The design of this project was dependent on many different components, ranging from logistics / transportation, design, buildability, supply and availability of products through to installation.

Seamless Integration Through BIM Collaboration

The design team worked and delivered the project using BIM 360, where main sub-contractors modelled and coordinated services while design was developed. The project also included modification of existing NICU admin space where a link corridor was created to access the decant ward.
